YES Ferndale Library Campaign Launch Party

Ferndale residents and YES Ferndale Library volunteers happily stand together displaying hopeful signs of support.

The YES Ferndale Library Committee officially launched our campaign on April 24 at Ferndale Project on Livernois. With much excitement and a strong gathering of neighbors, we were able to meet fellow library enthusiasts within the community to provide information about the upcoming library millages.

Attendees were met with the smiles of the committee volunteers, alongside explanatory pamphlets and free color-in bookmarks to bring home. We are grateful to local artist, Shanna Murphy, who generously donated her time and talents for face-painting (for all ages). After some snacks, drinks, and laughter there was a fun Library Trivia raffle contest- with prizes provided by the Friends of the Ferndale Library

Committee members gave short explanatory speeches and inspirational anecdotes, underlining the urgency of supporting these millage proposals. This event was a joyful chance to bring people together with a shared intention of discussing the important upcoming ballot initiatives and give the public a chance to ask committee members questions in return.

Key topics included:

  • informing the citizens of Ferndale about how a millage functions

  • why community services like a public library depends on us all

  • what is at stake for our library on the ballot for the August 4 Primary Election

Campaign handouts emphasized that the library has two ballot initiatives and will require citizens to vote YES twice. One proposal sustains daily operations which keeps the library open; ensuring its current services continue with the same accessibility and keeping its staffing strong. The second proposal funds necessary repair for fundamental building infrastructure (e.g. the geothermal HVAC which is nearly 17 years old). Proactive repair before a break-down responsibly saves money, as a possible full closure of the building and total replacement of an aging essential framework is much more costly.  While these goals seem large, the room was filled with hope and camaraderie.
